From the A580 "East Lancashire Road"
Approaching on the East Lancashire Road (A580T) there are three main exits for Leigh, working from East to West, these are :-- The first at Lowton St.Mary's (lights with the Petrol Station on the corner) takes the A572 St.Helens Road in to Leigh.
- The second is the new junction, with traffic lights, it is a T junction with only an exit towards Leigh (North) which leads straight on to the "Atherleigh Way" (Leigh Atherton bypass) which is the A579.
- The third is the Greyhound Roundabout which gives access to Liegh via A574.
- Further towards Manchester there are exists for Astley (The Queen's Arms at Booths town being the mail one) which eventually lead to Leigh down the A572, but take longer than the Greyhound Roundabout exit.
From Liverpool
The fastest route
is to take the second exit (above) from the A580 onto the Atherleigh Way A579 (left through a filter lane and light coming from Liverpool).Follow the Atherleigh Way straight across the lights (new Fire Station on the left) where it crosses the St. Helen's Road.
The Road rises to cross the Leeds Liverpool Canal and then drops to a roundabout (the new "Sainsbury's Roundabout", Sainsbury's being visible past the roundabout on the far left and the Railway Public House on the far right).
At the roundabout there are six exits (including the one you came in on) take the right hand lane and indicate right. Take the fouth exit from the roundabout. The fourth and fifth almost co-exist, you want to take the left of the two road (Findlay Street, notTwist Lane).
Follow Findlay Street, at the end you are forced to take a right turn into Railway Road. Once in Railway Road take the next left into Coniston Street and again at the end you are forced to take a right, into Walmesley Road.
Walmsley Road is one way with traffic carming measures at first, but it widens to a two way road at which point Sacred Heart Church (dark red brick with tower) is on the left. Drive past the Church and Parish House (lighter red brick with white trimmings). The Parish Centre car park entrance is a set of gates on the left.
The simplest route
is to take the first exit of the A580 East Lanc's Road onto St.Helen's Road (A572) and follow the road into the centre of Leigh (crossing the lights on the Atherleigh Way with the new Fire Station on the right).The road eventually rises to cross the Leeds Liverpool Canal and drops to a set of traffic light ( Edison's Public House on the far left and the Spinning Jenny Public House on the far right). Go straight on at these lights.
Go straight on at the next set of light (no right or left turn) and through a pelican (pedestrian) crossing and then take the next left. You should now have the Town Hall and Library on your left and the C of E Parish Church on your right.
At the end of St.Mary's Way (and the end of the Parish Church) take a right into Bengal Street and then follow the road to the left into Walmesley Road. Sacred Heart Church (dark red brick with tower) and Parish House (lighter red brick with white trimmings) are on the right. The Parish Centre car park entrance is the second set of gates on the right immediatly before the Parish House.
